About Jinan, China
Shandong Jinan, the City of Springs
Welcome to Jinan, the “City of Springs”. This capitol of all Shandong, with a current population of about 7 million, is a hub of information and activity in Eastern China. Though Jinan stands as a magnificent city, its 4000 years of history have not always been easy. Warlords have fought over Jinan during the many civil wars and invasions that plagued China’s past. As a result, the Great Wall of Qi was built to defend the area and remains the oldest great wall in all China. Despite the many changes of control and influence, the historical and cultural artifacts of the past have survived in excellent condition. Because of this, Jinan’s museums and libraries are among the greatest in China.
Naturally, there are many things too big to fit in a museum. In those cases, you’ll get to enjoy plenty of outdoor time as you visit the many temples and hot springs that have given Jinan its nickname. Occasional heat waves due to the formation of nearby mountains have led Jinan to be referred to as one of the great “furnaces” of China. Don’t worry; the temperature in Jinan is usually rather moderate. Winters will see average temperatures in the low 30s (°F), while summers usually remain in the low 80s.
For hundreds of years, Jinan has been famed across China with being the home of Lu cuisine. As you may have heard, the nation celebrates 8 distinct styles of cuisine. The style of Lu, which is the distinct style of Shandong cuisine, takes many of its dishes from the Jinan style. Of course the local people are extremely proud of this history, and go to great lengths to preserve their cooking. Many chefs and culinary artists will spend years trying to perfect their abilities and knowledge. In a nutshell, if you are looking for a good bite to eat, there are few places in China that will match the level of craftsmanship and taste that you will find here.
A truly remarkable feature of Jinan has been its ability to blend old with new in ways that are pleasing to both. Look in one direction and see examples of historical architecture, then turn around and find masterful buildings built with modern engineering. The city is home to both shopping centers with set prices, and markets to try your hand at haggling. Enjoy the many parks during the day, but end the night with a trip to one of the many bars, clubs, and karaoke centers that sprawl across the city.
No matter your interest, Jinan is a city of opportunity. And, as always, our door is open!
